Was in Derbyshire yesterday...

walking up hill and down dale, testing the knee. On't right is a photo of Edale taken from the north side of Mam Tor. Mam Tor is a large pointy hill that sits astride the ridge line running from Hope in the east to Despair in the West. Actually that's not true because Derbyshire isn't remotely like any place described in The Pilgrim's Progress, though it can be spooky when there's a fog. Hope really does exist even if it has been many years since Caleb was a popular name in the village.

that bit on Hope lying between hills of loss and win, and dark peaks and light peaks.... well, it sounds like a made-up world for certain.

gives me a different appreciation of some fantasy works...

Hayden,

The Derbyshire Dales are a really beautiful part of the world and not in the least made up. Actually the whole countryside is made up and has been since we ceased to be hunter gatherers and settled down to eat regular meals in one spot. The Derbyshire we see today is rugged and hilly and full of sheep with some cows but mainly it's hilly and rugged. A very attractive rugged but no bears which, personally, I think is a good thing. Are there bears in California? I have this idea that your home state has more than its fair share of rugged.

ahh yes, my home state has its share of rugged, and I don't mean the chin lines of wanna'be cowboys in LA. Bears, absolutely. We killed off all the griz before the beginning of the 20th century, but the black bears are becoming quite intrusive and preditory and learning to open refrigerators, coolers, swig beers and tear apart kitchens in recently renovated country lodges. They've also learned that they are plenty strong enough to open the back of a hatch-back car to get to a cooler - no more difficult than pulling the lid off of a can of sardines.

I live city-side and negotiate with skunks, racoons, and coyotes instead.

But this weekend I go camping in the Santa Cruz mountains. Maybe I'll get eaten by a mountain lion! I'll take Jake along - he can appease the lion's appetite while I run!

yes I'm playing, and yes, it's all true.

Sorry I'm catching up on your comments a week late. Santa Cruz? I though you were in Stockholm...

I got back from Stockholm the 24th.

Then cancelled plans to go camping at the last minute because my jet lag slammed in late and left me staring blankly at walls on Thursday.

ahh well. 2 weekends from now I'll head the other way and go to Mendocino..... making up for letting the summer slip by.

Caleb. What a name. I actually know a Guyanese-Brit. with that name.

Did you walk your knee off, Dan?
