Some autumn poems to set the post summer mood...

Autumn by William Carlos Williams

A stand of people
by an open

grave underneath
the heavy leaves

celebrates
the cut and fill

for the new road
where

an old man
on his knees

reaps a basket-
ful of

matted grasses for
his goats.

This is a wintry one by Seamus Heaney but I like it for the mood

Sloe Gin by Seamus Heaney

The clear weather of juniper
darkened into winter.
She fed gin to sloes
and sealed the glass container.

When I unscrewed it
I smelled the disturbed
tart stillness of a bush
rising through the pantry.

When I poured it
it had a cutting edge
and flamed
like Betelgeuse.

I drink to you
in smoke-mirled, blue-
black sloes, bitter
and dependable.

Burning the Small Dead by Gary Snyder

Burning the small dead
branches
broke from beneath
thick spreading
whitebark pine.
A hundred summers
snowmelt rock and air
hiss in a twisted bough.

And of course the great Matsuo Basho

Autumn moonlight

Autumn moonlight--
a worm digs silently
into the chestnut.

Is this in honour of Poetry Day?

I like 'Sloe gin'.

Not in honour of Poetry Day, just in honour of poetry. You like 'Sloe Gin'? The drink or the poem. For my part I like both the poema and the drink. In fact I like to drink whilst reading the poem!

i hate this season, the slow seep of light from our days, the impending storms.

Hayden,

I agree. I'm not a lover of autumn or winter, give me spring and summer everytime. I like your description of 'the slow seep of light from our days'. A lovely sentence.

The poem, Dan, seeing that I don't drink alcohol :-)

G,

Yeah, I was pretty sure you didn't drink alcohol, just checking. Re the poetry I just love Seamus Heaney and his writing.

I found 'Sloe Gin' in a recent collection whilst looking for poems about autumn. I'm with Hayden on the autumn thing and don't like the death of summer. Still there's cosy nights ahead I suppose and that's one thing to look forward to.

What's winter like in Georgetown? Not sure how far north you are from the equator. Does it get cooler or cold at night?

Winter?? Oh Dan, it's summer all year round here. Hot and baking, sticky. grrr.

I remember you writing about liking the heat. In December / Jan. when it freezes up north we get some cool. I LUUUUV when it freezes up north.

hehe.
